This was my very first obstacle course race, and it was lot of fun. I had bought a Groupon for the Primal Mud Run back in January to see what all the fuss is about. Some of my friends and coworkers had previously done a mud run as a group, and it sounded interesting and different enough from the usual 5K races that I figured, why not!
I honestly had no idea what to expect, and it seems the experience of each race can differ wildly. Some of the people I had talked to mentioned that upper body strength would be the thing to focus on, which is why I added P90X to my workout of running about 4 miles every day at the end of January.
Just before the race I ran into an local obstacle course workout group here in Raleigh. I hope to work out with these guys in the future, for one because there’s a technique to taking on some of the obstacles, which I know relatively little about.
The race was kicked off in waves of four runners every minute or so. This was to help space things out a bit and to avoid long lines and waits at obstacles.
Results
The official results were posted and I came in 16th with a time of 45:05 minutes. I guess I don’t really know what that means. It really is unlike a 5K or any other straight run. Calculating a pace seems kind of pointless, since each obstacle is different.
The variously obstacles were spaced out nicely, and running in between was great to recover from them. The rope traverse was most brutal. I didn’t know anything about technique, so I ended up pretty bruised.
I’m most definitely looking forward to the next race.
I realized I haven’t run a 5K in a while, and the Rock’n’Roll remix bling was incentive enough, since I’m already running the half marathon tomorrow. Packet Pickup As always, packet pickup was at the Rock’n’Roll Health & Fitness Expo held at the Raleigh Convention Center. I’ve participated in enough Rock’n’Roll events that I’m familiar with …
Phew! The Timberjack Challenge is a team-based event, organized by the Me Fine Foundation. Our obstacle course workout group had two teams partake in this event. And although it was “only” a 5K, there were 31 obstacles, and the race took about an hour. We ran the 5K distance almost exclusively in mud, which was rather strenuous. …
“The Ninja Challenge is a 5k obstacle race that will see if you are fit to walk the path of a ninja warrior. While anybody can run, only ninja can run up walls. The Ninja Challenge goes beyond a simple race and will truly test your athleticism. Running becomes only half the battle when you …
Last weekend on the 18th our obstacle course workout group met at Panic Point, where the Zombie Escape Mud Run will take place on September 8th. We did a pre-race run to test the obstacle course and give some last minute feedback. I put together a video of people climbing their way across the various obstacles. As always, …
